[Review] MSI GS66 Stealth Gaming Laptop: September 2020

And it’s finally here. All the wishes and requests of the gamers around have finally landed with the MSI GS66 Stealth Gaming laptop. Launched and sold in the market from April 2020, MSI GS66 Stealth Laptop has found its way into the Gaming Community’s heart. Although having a few variants under $1600, we cannot say it is an MSI budget gaming laptop.

There are many variants of the laptop with different configurations, for this review, we have tested the MSI GS66 10SE-039 as it is the only variant most likely to be purchased by maximum gamers.

We have tested the MSI GS66 Stealth Gaming Laptop for over 2 weeks now with best gamers we know and will pan out our findings in points below-

Point 1- Display

Whenever you look at any Computer or Laptop, Display is the first thing you notice. The 15.6′ display of the MSI has thin bezels on top and side but relatively big at the bottom with the MSI logo. The camera is 720p HD Webcam placed on the top bezel. The display is having a brightness of 321 nits paired with Anti-glare and has a resolution of 1920×1080 and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. With all of the features mentioned above, you will definitely not have any issues for frames per second on the display side.

Point 2- RAM and Storage

The MSI GS66 has 16 GB of RAM and is totally upgradeable with 2 slots and total upgrading cap of 64 GB. For the local storage, the gaming laptop has 512GB NVMe SSD with a reading/ writing speed of 530/500 MB/s approximately.  For Gamers especially, the storage space of 512 GB may not be sufficient so upgrading the storage is what we recommend firstly.

Point 3- CPU and GPU

The MSI with Intel Core i7-10750H 2.6 – 5.0GHz is no doubt to pull some real good power pack performances but when it comes to graphics, the MSI stealth has been astounding with its Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 6 GB.

We have tested the processor with tons of games and the performance stats were more than amazing. The smooth gameplay, high fps, and great frames transition made the gameplay time much more enjoyable. For Far Cry 5 at 1080p and ultra-high graphics, the MSI GS66 pull around 96 fps and if the graphics are lowered to high, the frames per second rate shot up to 120. The games look as beautiful in High graphics as in ultra with few rise in the frames per second. Although we played games like Counter-Strike: Global Offense and PuBG PC on ultra-high graphics, we enjoyed the high graphics settings for Campaign games like Middle Earth- Shadow of War which was giving out 116 frames per second.

Point 4- Battery Drain Test

The MSI laptop has a massive battery pack of 99.9Whr which in terms of numbers doesn’t give you a hint of its backup time so let me tell you, this laptop gave us around 9 hours of movie playback time. While playing games, although we prefer high graphics and maxed out settings, we did test the battery drain on different graphics levels. We almost got 5 to 6 hours of backup. The same was the result of high-level software for usage.

Point 5- Weight and Dimensions

The MSI GS66 Stealth weighs 4.63 lbs/ 2.1 Kilograms which can be considered pretty decent for a gaming laptop. The laptop has dimensions of 36.0 cm * 24.5 cm * 18 mm. It is quite portable and handy, a decent choice if you need to carry it often. The laptop has sharp edges and a smooth finish that looks very premium (of course, even the price is premium).

Point 6- Input/ Output Ports

The most important factor in the gaming laptop is the number of ports. To add external accessories, we need ports. The MSI Stealth GS66 gaming laptop has 3 USB ports, 1 HDMI port (supports 4k @ 60Hz), 1 audio port, 1 thunderbolt 3 port, and a charging slot. The power adaptor that is supplied with the laptop is 180W thin.

Point 7- Price

Now towards the final point, price. The MSI GS66 Stealth has almost 13 variants to choose from with a price bracket that spread over $1499 to more than $3000 with extra accessories and upgraded tech parts. For we have tested a few of them and finally put down a review for MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE-039 laptop as it is one of the most correct choices with respect to price to performance ratio and is priced at $1499. We believe that gaming laptops have been launching pretty fast and with upgraded tech and lower prices. So investing more than $2200 on gaming laptops may not be viable for many of us.

Our Final Verdict: Should You Buy MSI GS66?

MSI GS66 Stealth is one of the stylish gaming laptops and true to name, stealthy. If you want to purchase a gaming laptop and with a budget of $1500, want a professional-looking laptop with a beast under the hood, MSI GS66 Stealth Laptop is for you. With few minor tweaks and upgrading RAM and internal storage, it would be a better companion. As we said earlier, this is not one of the MSI budget gaming laptop but a premium gaming machine.
