The answer to this is:

DiskDigger – Image recovery solution

Ironically an unknown software, which is freely available on the google play store but no one knows about it. Now bear in mind even though disk digger is a free tool, it’s a really powerful tool.

Note: Not all photos can be recovered. If the data location has been overwritten, you probably won’t be able to recover the data. But Many times, it does work like a charm. Now for more info, read the last section, which describes how it works.

Recover Deleted Photos With DiskDigger

Disk digger has two versions, paid and free. The paid version has more functionalities. You can also find the paid version for free on the internet, but I don’t recommend it. The free version is more than enough for recovering photos. However, if you want to recover all files like images, video, text files, etc., then the pro version is the perfect fit for you.

Recovering Images on Android (Do I need Root?)

Now I m sure your wondering whether you require a rooted device. Well, funny enough, you do not. If you want to recover deleted images from your android device, then you do not require root. However, if you want to recover all the files, then Root is a must. Rooting a phone generally is better because it supports more features; however, it is not everyone’s cup of tea.

In short, you do not need root access to recover your photos

Download the App from the play store.

Once the app is installed open the app, and you will see the following screen

You can see the BASIC SCAN option. Click on START BASIC PHOTO SCAN option to begin scanning the device for recoverable images.

It will automatically start searching in every directory for photos and thumbnails. Once it finds the files, it will show them for recovery in a gallery format.

See the image below for reference:

Select the images you want to recover from your android device. Now choose the option which says SAVE THIS FILE LOCALLY.

You can also use filters that can help you restore your images faster. The image size and date can help you find the specific image you want to restore.

As you can see, when you chose this option, the file is locally saved on my device.

Congratulations, you just recovered your deleted photos.

I hope you remember where you saved the image. Now go to the file manager and open the location, and you will find the image you want.

I hope you found the images you wanted.

Root Method for recovering all files

Now, what if I did not find the images. Or what if I wanted to recover files and not images. Maybe it was a secret video.

For this, you need root access. Only with root can you scan the entire device and recover files so if your device is rooted. Open the disk digger app.

The app will ask for root permission, as shown in the image below. GRANT permission to the app

Now the next screen will probably look like this:

You have to select the location where the files are stored. For, e.g., your sd card or your internal memory card. I have selected my internal memory.

A pop-up screen has now appeared, as shown below.

Here you select the file type you want to recover. For eg like  .mp3 or .mp4 or .docx etc.

Once you have decided your file type, click on OK.

Then disk digger will start recovering the files as shown in the image below:

Similar to images, select the files you want to recover and choose the location where you want to save them.

How does disk digger work?

Disk digger is a data recovery software that recovers the data from our android devices. But what exactly happens when we delete something from our phone. To better explain this, I will give you an example.

Step 1: Imagine I delete an image of 10mb (Image 1).

Step 2: That 10 MB space is now marked as available. Even though the existing data is not completely wiped.

Step 3: When a new 10 MB (image 2) is saved, it will replace the data of (Image 1) since it was marked as available.

Now, if step 3 has already happened, then disk digger cannot recover the old image since the data is overwritten. However, if step 3 has yet to happen, then you can easily recover the image with disk digger. It basically checks the data which we cannot directly see and interact with. Since the data, even though marked as available in step 2, is still present. Disk digger simply recovers it.

Commonly asked questions about recovering images with disk digger:

Q1. Do you need a rooted phone?

Nope as mentioned before, you do not require a rooted phone. However, it can help in case you want to recover files and not images.

Q2. I did not find my images. What do I do?

This is not a 100% guaranteed solution. Sometimes the files are overwritten on the device, in which case recovery of images becomes impossible. For more info, read the section about how disk digger works.

Q3. Is this tool legal?

Of course, it’s legal as long as you are using your device. Trying to get someone else’s personal deleted data is not legal, even if that person is your girlfriend or fiance. So be very careful while recovering images.
